WHAT IS COUNSELLING?
With the many types of psychological and emotional support available today, it can become confusing as to what Counselling is. My personal definition of Counselling is as follows: Counselling is a relationship, entered into by two consenting parties, that is both professional and deeply personal. This relationship consists of purposeful conversation where deep exploration occurs without judgement.
Counselling is NOT advice giving. Counselling does NOT diagnose or pathologise. I believe in individual autonomy, and the work we do together is to support your empowerment to make decisions rather than prescribing a list of "do's and don'ts". The relationship and atmosphere is set up to be one of safety to explore and clarify issues, increase self-awareness, and develop practical strategies that are in alignment with your values, strengths and goals.
DO YOU ONLY WORK WITH PEOPLE OF COLOUR AND MEMBERS OF THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY?
While my work is focussed on centring and uplifting the experiences of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC individuals, you do not have to be part of these communities to access sessions with me. My practice is one of inclusion, intersectionality and accessibility and I remain humbled to hold space for any individual who allows me to do so.
WHAT ARE YOUR FEES?
My fees are listed on the 'Bookings' page and are dependent on the type of service being offered.
I also have a set number of places available to offer sessions on a sliding payment scale. I do not believe anyone should be turned away from support due to financial hardship. Please contact me to learn more or secure a place for a sliding scale payment arrangement
WHAT THEORIES AND FRAMEWORKS DO YOU USE?
I am a person-centred, integrative Counsellor. This means that I value you as a whole person. There is nothing to fix, because you are not broken. You may be experiencing issues that require a different perspective or new strategies for coping, and that is okay. We are constantly evolving beings, and what has worked in the past may not work for us now.
I work through a Strengths-based, Existential lens that delves curiously into the underlying experiences we all must grapple with as human beings in some form or another. From these experiences, we all develop our own meanings & choices to help navigate the world. Being an integrative therapist, I may choose to use some methods or interventions from a wide range of approaches. For example, some clients love CBT interventions, where as others want to engage in more spiritual/transpersonal counselling. The utilised techniques and theories are always tailored to the client, and always done collaboratively with consent. In addition, every approach taken is always grounded in a trauma-informed manner that creates safety and regards the client as the one who sets the tone & pace for each session.
WHAT SORT OF ISSUES DO YOU WORK WITH?
I work with individuals who are experiencing anxiety, depression, and other mental distresses in their day-to-day lives. I also work with grief & loss, both of physical losses and less tangible experiences such as life transitions. I have great passion and specialised interest in the mind-body connection, and how the body reacts to traumatic & distressing experiences. Through both purposeful conversation and exploration of practical strategies, my aim is to support you to create safety in your everyday world so that you can integrate previous experiences to explore new possibilities.
DO YOU ACCEPT NDIS FUNDED CLIENTS?
Absolutely. I have worked in the NDIS space before alongside individuals living with psychosocial disabilities and can provide bookings for clients who have a plan-managed or self-managed NDIS plan. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require a quote for service prior to booking.
DO I NEED A REFERRAL?
No, you do not require a GP referral to access Counselling. At present, I am unable to offer Medicare Rebates. However, my fees for service are comparable to or less than many of the out-of-pocket gap payments to access Medicare Rebate Services.
CAN I BOOK AN INTRO SESSION?
You are most welcome to book a introduction consultation with me via the 'Bookings' page. These introductory consults are offered at no cost to you for the purpose of allowing informed choice in your Therapeutic Support.
All new clients are also subject to a brief intake call prior to the first appointment if they have not booked an introductory session first.
HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
Because we are not bound by referrals or Medicare Rebates, you are welcome to access as many or as few sessions as you like. Some clients prefer one-off check ins, while others have found regular, long-term therapy to be more suited to their needs. The timing and frequency of our sessions are part of our mutually collaborative process, and we can discuss a schedule that suits you.
